Description

Postdoctoral fellowships are available in the laboratory of Wolfdieter Springer to conduct NIH-, DOD-, and MJFF-funded research on mechanisms of neurodegeneration at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. The Springer lab focuses on selective autophagy pathways, in particular mitophagy, and how alterations contribute to Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and related disorders. The lab employs a multidisciplinary approach using state-of-the-art techniques in cell biology, biochemistry, and imaging to unravel the underlying disease biology, thereby bridging critical gaps between human genetic, clinical, and neuropathological findings.

Specific research projects include 1) investigation of mitophagy-related mechanisms in Lewy body diseases and tauopathies, 2) studies on phosphorylated ubiquitin as a biomarker for mitophagy in cells, tissues, and biofluids, 3) identification of disease signatures resulting from altered mitophagy, 4) genome-wide analysis of mitophagy modulators, as well as 5) genetic and pharmacological stimulation of mitophagy.

Mayo Clinic and the Department of Neuroscience offer an outstanding research and training environment with a competitive stipend and a generous fringe benefit package.

Requirements

Applications are invited from motivated candidates holding a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. with less than five years of experience and a strong research background in neurobiology, cell biology, or biochemistry. Expertise in structural biology and biophysics and/or induced pluripotent stem cells and gene editing is highly desirable. Candidates should have a record of impactful, peer-reviewed publications.
