Description

A highly motivated and creative postdoctoral fellow is needed to join the team at the Calgary Prion Research Unit.

The project aims at studying the effects of the cellular accumulation of prions in the endo-lysosomal pathway of infected neurons, in particular on vesicle trafficking and cargo recycling. The overall goal is to investigate a link of defects in endo-lysosomal vesicle trafficking and neurodegeneration and to identify new targets for the treatment of prion diseases, fatal and infectious neurodegenerative diseases of humans (e.g. Creutzfeldt Jakob disease) and animals. Lab members work with prion-infected neuronal cell lines, primary neurons, organotypic slice cultures, and mouse models of prion disease.

The successful applicant is expected to take on a leading role in study design, establishing models such as organotypic slice cultures, co-supervision of graduate and undergraduate students, as well as drafting manuscripts and assisting in writing grant proposals.

The candidate has the opportunity and is expected to apply for postdoctoral fellowships depending on eligibility. The lab offers a vibrant research environment and strong ties to national and international collaborators as well as the opportunity to visit relevant conferences to present results. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has a very active postdoctoral fellow community, and its membership with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute provides excellent opportunities for career development (see https://hbi.ucalgary.ca/education/realise).

Requirements

  • PhD in neuroscience, cell biology, biochemistry, or related field within up to 2.5 years after completion.
  • Strong scientific knowledge in cell biology and confocal microscopy, demonstrated by publications.
  • Excellent English language and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in preparation and handling of primary neuron cultures is an asset.
