The Alzheimer's Clinical & Translational Research Unit (ACTRU) and Massachusetts Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (MADRC) seeks to hire a creative, knowledgeable and self-motivated postdoctoral fellow to work at the confluence of neurology/neuroscience and immunology. The fellow will work on new and ongoing projects aimed at exploring immunomodulatory interventions for understanding and treating neurodegenerative diseases. Projects will be directly linked to ongoing and future clinical trials in neurodegenerative diseases. The fellow will have the opportunity to analyze peripheral and CNS-based human biofluids and cell samples from clinical studies. The studies are aimed at affecting disease outcome by manipulation of immunological status. Methods could include antigen stimulation of peripheral blood and CSF cells and associated immunological assays, genome wide analyses of gene expression, and epigenetic analysis. Opportunities to relate laboratory to other clinically-derived data, such as cutting edge-plasma and CSF biomarkers of neurodegenerative disease, neuroimaging, and cognitive testing will be readily available.
Applicants may come from diverse training backgrounds, but should have expertise and familiartity with methodologies from one or more fields: cell and molecular biology, immunology, clinical neurology, neuroscience or neuroimmunology. Previous experience with cell culture would be highly valued. Experience with clinical and interventional trials is not expected.
The fellow can look forward to presenting their research findings at regular lab meetings, and at the local, national, and international level, to publish, and apply for fellowships and grant opportunities as possible.

The MADRC is a multidisciplinary research group which includes clinicians, biomarker and pathology researchers, neuroimaging experts, and data management and biostatisticians collaborating in studies, and sharing resources and services to guide training, knowledge gathering, and ultimately improving health care delivery to treat Alzheimer's disease. The ACTRU, working within the MADRC, is directed by Dr. Steven Arnold, and is comprised of a collegial group of individuals of all ages and levels of training and leadership.
The ACTRU is actively engaged in efforts to increase diversity both in its lab and in clinical trials, and encourages applications from underrepresented minorities, all gender identities and ages, and individuals aligned with these interests.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Planning and performing experiments related to measuring immunomodulation in human neurodegenerative diseases. This would include biospecimen preparation and analysis (blood and CSF), immunoassays, cell culture and recovery, flow cytometry and cell sorting/isolation, nucleic acid purification, nucleic acid library construction, and quantitative PCR, for example.
Working with collaborators and core laboratories/biotech partners to design experimental set-up and prepare samples for -omics technologies such as RNA-Seq, and epigenetics, and working with bioinformaticians to test key hypotheses and develop exploratory research avenues.
Working with the fellow's supervisor to set benchmarks for trial hypothesis testing and collaborating with trial clinicians to integrate molecular data with neurocognitive/neuroimaging outcomes.
In collaboration with the ACTRU data analysis team, perform assessment of data quality-control metrics, analyze data and perform statistical testing, and prepare figures and manuscripts for publication.
Supervise technicians and students in the lab when appropriate.
Participate in weekly lab meetings and present data. Present data through publication of manuscripts and attendance at local, national and international conferences
Seek opportunities for independent funding and interaction with biotech industry collaborators.
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Will assist PI with ordering using the electronic ordering system. Will record spending to assist in monitoring budgets. Will consider opportunities to apply for fellowship support if/when appropriate, with the full support of the principle investigator.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, creative, and have a strong motivation to learn
Technical expertise in molecular or cellular-based approaches to neuroscience, immunology, and/or cell biology is strongly preferred.
Experience analyzing -omics data is preferred but not essential.
Must have excellent interpersonal, speaking, and writing abilities. Previous first-author publications or publications in process are essential.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training:
PhD in immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, neurosciences, systems biology, or a related field is required.
Equivalent Experience:
Candidates who can demonstrate equivalent experience to a Ph.D. through work in a cellular/molecular biology laboratory, for example, will be considered.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Ph.D. training or three+ years of relevant work in an immunology, cellular or molecular biology laboratory.
