Description
A postdoctoral fellow position is available immediately in the Lemere laboratory at Brigham and Women's Hospital to utilize a novel antibody to prevent amyloidosis, inflammation, and synaptic dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease. This position is funded by an NIH RF1/R01 research grant titled "AD Immunotherapy with a Novel CDC-Mutant Anti-Pyroglutamate-3 Abeta Antibody to Avoid Vascular Side Effects" under the direction of Dr. Cynthia Lemere. The department will appoint the successful candidate to the BWH Medical Staff as a research fellow and will propose that him or her for appointment as a research fellow at the Harvard Medical School (HMS); however, final approval of this appointment rests with HMS.
The Lemere Lab has made seminal discoveries regarding active and passive anti-amyloid immunization in amyloid mouse models over the past 20 years. These findings led to the establishment of an international collaborative effort between Dr. Lemere's lab and Vivoryon Therapeutics (formerly known as Probiodrug AG) in Germany). The NIH-funded project involves in vivo immunization studies in mice including MRI brain analysis, microPET imaging, behavioral testing, and microglia single cell genomics, as well as in vitro examination of the neuroprotective effects of the antibody. The laboratory is funded by multiple NIH and NASA grants to support research studies related to testing of therapeutic treatments, understanding the role of complement in neurodegenerative diseases, and estimating the CNS and cardiovascular risks of deep space radiation. The ultimate goal of the laboratory is to discover novel therapies that are relevant to Alzheimer's disease, neurodegeneration, and radiation-induced injury.
